Cross Country runs strong at Muskegon as men finish 3rd, women 10th

On a beautiful Fall afternoon the Raider harriers rolled into Muskegon for the Jayhawk Invite—their final tune-up before the MCCAA & NJCAA Region XII championships on Oct 29. GRCC's men led things off on the 3-looped 8k course at University Park golf course.  Getting out to a quick start and leading the Raiders for a second straight race was Chris Santana- who finished as the fifth collegiate runner --20th overall—in a personal record time of 26:23.

Lansing, Mich – GRCC's men's cross country team earned a berth into the NJCAA National Championship this past Saturday with a 3rd place finish at the NJCAA Region XII Championship. GRCC's women, who took 8th of 10 failed to qualify as a team, but GRCC's Jacqueline Jernigan punched her ticket to El Dorado, KS with a 20:08.7 13th place individual finish.  Joining Jackie in El Dorado from the women's team is Jessica Quist.

Women's Results | Men's Results El Dorado, KS --  History was made in El Dorado, Kansas today at Prairie Trails Golf Course as the Raiders made its first appearance at the NJCAA Division I National Cross Country Championships. The two qualifiers from the ladies team- Jacqueline Jernigan and Jessica Quist- ran first. Jernigan got out strong the first mile in about 60th place, but faded a little in the second half of the race and finished in 98th place of 313 finishers (20:21). Quist took a little more conservative approach early in the race, positioning herself in about 150th place at the mile and trying to move up through the field. Quist did move up slightly and finished in 146th place (20:57). Both young ladies left slightly disappointed with their results, yet were extremely happy with the season as a whole.

Grand Rapids, MICH – GRCC's cross country teams showed great potential this past weekend as the men's team took 10th place out of 22 teams while the women's team broke a few personal records with three freshman led the charge for the women. GRCC's Jessica Sluiter finished first for the women at 20:22.3 with Stephanie Thomas finishing just moments behind at 20:28.2.  Cierra Ensign's 21:16.7 finish was third on the Raider roster while Maya McAdory finished last for GRCC with a 28:57.4.

Lansing, MICH – GRCC's men's and women's cross country visited East Lansing last Friday to compete in the Spartan Invitational.  GRCC's women were paced by Stephanie Thomas and Jessica Sluiter who finished with times of 26:36.1 and 26:37.8 for 170th and 172nd place overall.  Cierra Ensign was next to cross the line for the women's team at 27:08.0 for 191st.   Tegan Jackson's 33:11.5 earned her 284th.  Rachel Aalny of Bowling Green State University took first overall with a time of 21:19.0.  Lansing Community College's Kristen McGahan was the first NJCAA finisher with a time of 23:36.6 for 57th overall.

Men's Results | Women's Results Lansing, MICH – With just one race remaining in their conference schedule, GRCC's cross country teams are at full stride having recorded a very solid finish at the Lansing Invitational this past weekend.   The women's team took 14th overall and 4th amongst community colleges led by Stephanie Thomas who finished just two seconds above the 20-minute mark for the second fastest time in GRCC women's XC history earning her 22nd overall.  Cierra Ensign broke the 21 minute mark for the first time in her running career with a 20:59.0 shattering her high school PR of 23:45.

Results Muskegon, MICH – Stephanie Thomas and Chris Santana continue to lead the way for the Raider cross country teams as the men finished 3rd of 17 teams and the women 12th of 17th.  Santana finished the race in 26:23 for 19th place overall while Stephanie Thomas's 19:22 for a women's school record.

Farmington Hills, MICH -- The GRCC women's cross country team made the two hour journey East to compete in the Oakland CC Raider Ruckus Run Invitational and made the trip worthwhile winning the program's first Invitational title as Stephanie Thomas took individual top honors in the odd-distance 3.7k (2.3M) race at 14:37. The Raiders scored 37 points to our point runner up Grace Bible College by 9 points. Thomas threw down an impressive surge just after the mile mark to win by an impressive 45 seconds and continued to build on her impressive first year of competitive running.

Men's Results | Women's Results Lansing, MICH – GRCC's men's and women's cross country teams are bound for NJCAA Nationals following strong finishes at the MCCAA & Region XII Championships this weekend. Jessica Sluiter and Cierra Ensign each punched their tickets to compete at Nationals shaving roughly 15 seconds each off their personal best times.

Men's & Women's Results Fort Dodge, IOWA – GRCC's cross country runners finished strong at the NJCAA Division I National Championship as the men took 24th overall led by Chris Santana with a 82nd place overall finish (27:04.0), while GRCC's Stephanie Thomas finished 35 overall (19:20.0) in the women's championship race.

Jefferis was an extremely positive force on the Rockford Cross Country team the past four years. During her senior season she was named All-Conference and All-Area. The Raiders are looking for her to continue her success at Grand Rapids Community College.

The GRCC Men's Cross Country team made a run into the post season and placed 24th overall as a team at the NJCAA Division I National Championship this past fall. As a team, the Raiders finished as one of the top MCCAA schools represented, just behind Macomb and Lansing at the National Championship.
